Dental Fillings

One of the most common procedures at Deer Run Dentistry in Greenwood Village, CO are dental fillings. From cavities to discolorations, dental fillings correct the most common dental problems safely and pain-free without sacrificing results. Dr. Devin Rentz can repair the damage to the teeth while still ensuring the patient retains their natural look.

What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings replace tooth decay with synthetic material. If left untreated, decay eats into the tooth, which can  eventually requires a root canal or removal of the tooth itself. Fillings stop the decay from spreading while at the same time strengthening the overall integrity of teeth. Fillings come in various types of materials, although the most common ones are:

  • Composite fillings. This type of filling is a combination of resins and fine particles designed to match the color of natural teeth. Composite is a strong alternative to amalgam, plus composite provides a more natural look. Cement is also often used in conjunction with composite resin to allow it to adhere better to the tooth surface.
  • Porcelain (ceramic). This type of filling is a combination of porcelain, glass, and ceramic particles. Porcelain fillings are often used in crowns, veneers, onlays and inlays of the teeth. These fillings are very durable and can last longer than composite fillings.

When Are Dental Fillings Necessary?

Dental fillings are necessary whenever there is minimal to moderate tooth decay present. The size of the filling used depends on the extent of the decay, effectively sealing the cavity from bacteria and plaque buildup. Dental fillings also help reinforce the damaged tooth and prevent it from chipping, cracking, or breaking inward. Additionally, fillings serve a cosmetic purpose. They can patch up a break or unsightly crack in the tooth and restore its original look.

After a thorough dental exam, Dr. Quartuccio may recommend dental fillings if decay/cavities are found. Typically, a filling takes less than an hour. Smaller, simple fillings may take less than 20 minutes to complete. However, multiple or larger fillings can take longer, or may require multiple visits.  A dental filling typically lasts for many years, if not a lifetime.
